A Tale of Two Screwups--One Silly; the other Deadly
Sen John Kerry has a habit of putting his foot into his mouth. His attempt at humor during an appearance at PCC the other day. Failed. Failed bigtime.
While attacking the President Bush as essentially clueless, his words came out sounding like a put-down of the troops fighting in Iraq. It wasn't, of course, but it sounded like it was. What followed, as night follows day, was an all out attack by GOP politicians, and their allies in the right-wing media, trying desperately to produce a Cat 5 hurricane in a teapot.
Reliably, Fox News led the way and has been keeping up a steady barrage of anti-Kerry commentary through at least three news cycles.
Kerry did the right thing and apologized to anyone offended by his remarks. Fox News and the rightist politicians it shills for however have not. Apology or no, they keep on hitting Kerry over the head with this story in a last ditch attempt to find something, anything, to prevent a Democrat takeover of the Congress. If you didn't know any better you'd think that John Kerry is on the ballot next Tuesday. Or for that matter that he has something to do with Mr Bush's prosecution of the Iraq war.
The the real screw-up in all this, doesn't belong to John Kerry, but to George Bush. Sen. Kerry just told a bad joke; Mr Bush and his delusionary Neocon advisors, led us into worthless military adventure planned and carried out on the basis of worthless intelligence. Compounding their errors, they engaged in practically no post-war planning to speak of. The horrifying results of their non-policies in Iraq can be seen on the strife-filled streets of any Iraq city today.
The current administration has made a mess in Iraq and in the process precipitated a civil war. As it stand now, nearly 3000 US troops have died in this war and there is no end is in sight. Worse, now it comes out that US soldiers have had to take orders from the current Iraq prime minister, to end a blockade of a section of Baghdad where it is thought a captured US soldier is being held. The current Iraq PM Nouri al-Maliki is himself allied with the very Shia insurgents who are trying to kill US soldiers, (as well as unarmed Sunnis) who happen to come within the cross-hairs of their guns.
3000 KIA and all the GOP and their allies at Fox News can talk about it a botch joke by a politician not even on the ballot.
The GOP deserves to lose this Tuesday. Lose bigtime; no party so incompetent and so slavishly devoted to the failed foreign policy of a clueless president deserves to hold power.
GOP out!
