Anti-Birth Control
Morality Police on the Prowl
Anybody who thinks it’s safe to use or not use birth-control
devices ought to take a look at
Russell Shorto’s piece in
The New York
Times Magazine.
If you believe your sex life is private, or at least should be
private, you’ll be in for a nasty shock.
As Shorto points out, Groups like the American Life League, The
Christian Medical and Dental Associations, Focus on the family,
the Christian Coalition , the Roman Catholic church, and other
such groups are intent on not only limiting a woman’s right to
an abortion under Roe v. Wade, but anyone’s right to use birth
control devices. The right to use such devices is part of a
constitutionally-decided right to privacy, a right pretty much
taken for granted since the US Supreme Court decided Griswold v.
Connecticut back in 1965.
The social/religious conservatives are trying to take those
rights away.
The conservatives have graduated from simply opposing abortion,
and now want to outlaw birth control. They’re busy lobbying
state legislatures to make it harder for women not only to get
legal abortions, but also make it harder for anyone to buy birth
control devices. They’re pushing for state laws giving
pharmacists the right to refuse to dispense morning-after pills.
They also want Congress to suspend the sale of the abortion
pills, like RU-486.
Basically the religious right, in concert with the GOP, want to
get into your bedroom, regulate your sex life and decide whether
or not you’ll be able to use things like condoms or IUDs.
What’s next, birth-quotas for couples?
The way things are going, childlessness and the use of birth
control will someday become a crime.
All the more reason to vote the anti-choice nutcases out of
office this November.
