Beyond Dumb Constitutional Amendment

Read Darleen's Place today. You'll find Mz Darleen complaining about a  'beyond dumb' remark made by some NY state official.  You can read about it here.

Yeah, it was dumb, alright.

Here's something dumber:

A constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. The Senate's due to consider a constitutional amendment that will define marriage as a "union between a man and a woman" and thus prevent states from granting marital status (or anything similar) to same sex couples.

Of course such an amendment has no chance of being approved by either 2/3ds of the Congress or by 3/4ths of the states.

So why is the president and people like Sen. Frist putting such nonsense on the Senate's agenda?

Simple, the GOP is going to lose the House and maybe the Senate this November.

So GOP leaders think that by wasting the Senate's time putting out a useless proposal attempting to federalize marriage law, social conservatives will turn out in numbers sufficient to keep the GOP in power.

It probably won't work.

While many people dislike same-sex marriage, they don't' see it as a federal matter and don't want the federal government involved with ordinary marriage law.

(Amazing to what lengths the far right and its allies in congress till go to,  in promotion their  Kulturkamp.)

Doesn't the GOP have better things to do?  Like maybe dealing with the war in Iraq, maybe?  Or terrorism?  Or immigration?  Issues which which really matter to most Americans and are part of the constitutional obligations of the Congress?

Apparently not.

Disgusting.
